Over 100 people attended the Inaugural Norman Innovation Challenge in December. The event was at the Studio at Sooner Theatre. Four teams from Moore Norman Technology Center and three teams from the University of Oklahoma competed separately during the afternoon and presented to a panel of five judges comprised of local business professionals. The program showcased 90-second quick pitches from each student team followed by an award presentation recognizing the winning teams selected in the earlier venture concept competitions. MNTC’s winner was Real Kitchen Salsa, a student-led and student-ran salsa company that has two products available in local grocers including three Homeland stores and Crest. Driveby won the university competition and was represented by four team members. The company has created a new device that provides traffic monitoring and data collection and is reportedly more accurate and cost-effective than the existing technology available. Each winning team member will receive $500 from NEDC in the form of cash or a scholarship and Price College is giving an additional $500 to each of the university winners. Additionally, the winners of the LoveWorks competition held the previous week were spotlighted. These winners are primarily middle school students in the Norman Public Schools system. Coincidentally, the winner of the MNTC competition was a student who had developed her idea in the LoveWorks program. Check out the Norman Transcript’s coverage of the event here: link.
